Legal Issues:
The defamation act states that journalists must avoid making defamatory statements which could lead to libel cases. Libel is written slander which could harm or offend readers. This links to my magazine as the articles and coverlines I write must not offend anyone who comes across my magazine. This is important for me to consider when making my magazine as I need to make sure I do not offend anyone who reads my magazine as this will make people less likely to buy or read my magazine. I will overcome this by proof reading all articles and coverlines to make sure it isn't offence and my editor will check them as well.
The data protection act is safeguarding sensitive information from data loss or corruption and control access to information relating individual people. This links to my magazine as I ask for readers to include opinions on films in a chat room and fan fiction to be included in my magazine. I will also have their information if they sign up to the subscriptions. This important as I need to make sure no personal data is withheld of people who share their work and opinions. I will overcome this by making sure all personal data is only held if it is completely necessary to do so otherwise it will be discarded. Any necessary information will be very secure with only very limited amount of trusted people will have access to.
The Intellectual Property act provides legal protection of copy right, patents, design rights and trade marks of your own work. This links to my magazine as all my content and articles will be original and I need to make sure none of work can be copied. This is very important as if I don't trade mark and copy right my work people can take it and make replicas of my magazine which would mean all my hard work is stolen and I will loose fans and revenue. I will overcome this by registering my masthead of Kiss & Tell so that it cannot be used for another magazine and I will also copyright all content I make.
Ethical Issues:
I need to consider that I protect the interests of people such as those from minorities and or people who are vulnerable. This links to my magazine as I state that I will include women from all races and religions as this will make any woman who comes across my magazine feel welcome. This is very important to my magazine as I want to make sure that I don't offend anyone as this will give me a very bad reputation. I will overcome this by not pointing out cultural differences and by talking about all of the people I promote in films equally. I will also get my editor to check over all articles to double check work is appropriate and doesn't offend.
Due to my age group being 12-19 years old I need to make sure all content is age appropriate. This links to my magazine as this is my primary target audience and I need to ensure that it is suitable for all ages in that age range. This is important for things such as intimate images as 12 year olds are two young to be exposed to highly intimate images. I will overcome this by having age appropriate images as I don't want to loose fans and get a bad reputation. I will also have my editor as well as myself double check all images making sure their appropriate for my primary target audience of 12-19 years old.
I need to make sure I don't expose and invade the privacy of those I intend to interview and I need to make sure all knowledge is true and factual and has consent to share. This links to my magazine as I will be including inside scoops of actors and actresses local and well known in my magazine. This important as if I lie about actors people in the future wont trust more or want to be associated in my magazine and I will gain a bad reputation. I will overcome this by only putting inside scoops in my magazine that are 100% the truth and have been signed and approved my the actors and actresses themselves so I have written permission to include it in my magazine.
