Generating IDEAS (P1,M1 U21)

Learning Outcome 1 (u21)- Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief

P1 (U21) - EXPLAIN DIFFERENT IDEAS FORAN ORIGINAL MEDIA PRODUCT BASED ON A CLIENT BRIEF

M1 (u21) discuss strengths and weaknesses of the different ideas

I have been hired by Cinecloud Pictures to produce and pitch an online and print based film magazine for North London.

From reading the brief I have interpreted the following:

Explicit:

  • Produce a new online and print based film magazine
  • North London based magazine
  • Use independent film companies
  • Promote a new film release produced by an existing North London Independent company
  • Reference a current and new streaming platform
  • magazine should be locally distributed initially
  • make sample pages from the first edition of the magazine, to showcase the new film, independent company and streaming service
Implicit:
  • Ideas for wider mass distribution for the magazine
  • hope to promote the magazine at popular film festivals across all areas of London
Open to Interpretation:
  • Colour Scheme - I will be able to decide what colours I include in my magazine
  • Target audience - I will be able to decide who I target my magazine towards
  • Layout/design of front cover and double paged spread -I will be able to choose how my magazine looks in terms of fonts and pictures and where they are in my magazine
  • what steaming platform I choose - I will be able to choose what streaming platform I promote within my magazine
  • Barcodes/websites - I will be able to choose what and if I inlcude websistes and barcodes

Initial idea 1:

I could create a genre based film magazine on a genre such as romance as this genre is very popular. This magazine would attract a wide age range of predominately women from 16-40 as i would be promoting a wide range of romance films targeted at different ages.

Initial idea 2:

I could create an actor based magazine on upcoming films. By creating a film magazine which focuses on actors I would be able to be inclusive to all genders and attract a mass audience as each month I would be promoting a new actor/actress which would attract a different audience.

Initial idea 3:

I could create a streaming based film magazine which would work alongside a North London independent streaming platform. For example I would promote Netflix original new films as well as promoting a north London streaming platform's upcoming films this would allow the independent company to gain mass exposure.

Idea 1:

My first idea for my magazine is genre based, my chosen genre is romance. This magazine would be targeted at women who are keen to keep up with the newest releases of romance films. In my magazine, I would include a section for readers to send in fan fiction based on the newest romance movies, or film reviews on the latest films as this is a way for my readers to communicate and find people with similar interests. My colour scheme would include various shades of pinks and reds as these colours have connotations of romance and love which is a key feature for a romance focused magazine. My magazine would be distributed monthly at a price of £4 but if they pay for a subscription it would be £2 and an extra magazine at the end of the year and online print would be £2.
I will also include a section where I promote a new and upcoming north London based romance film each month, as this company is less mainstream i will be able to get exclusives and q&a's for my magazine.
I will include all races of women and classes in my magazine to make my readers feel welcome, this is due to the idea that my magazine will feature a lot of women as they are normally the protagonist in romance film. There will also feature promdominatley a white cast however there has been an introduction to the inlcusion of other races and ethnicities into the romance films and as a result I will reflect that in my magazine.

Idea 2:

My second idea for my magazine is actor and actresses based. This magazine would be based on famous actors and actresses in new and upcoming films. By having my magazine actor and actress based it will bring a wide range of audiences as each month I will be promoting a new person.  I will also include a section dedicated to independent north London film actors that are upcoming and not very well known,  as a result of this I will be able to get a Q&A with these actors. I will price my magazine at £4.50 but if my loyal fans have a monthly subscriptions it will be £2.50 a month and an extra magazine at Christmas time only for subscriptions readers and online print would be £2 which is affordable for all classes. In my magazine I will include reviews from my fans of the previous months movies so my fans can share ideas and find people will common interests, this will also make my readers feel included in the magazine. By having an actor/actresses based magazine based on upcoming films as a USP I will have interviews with people who have worked with my focused actor/actress this way my readers will feel like they are receiving and inside scoop each month.
This will be targeted at men and women aged 16-30 and it will include all races, religions as it will promote different actors every month from a variety of backgrounds, this as a result will allow me to attract a wider target audience. This is due to the idea that both men and women will be featured in my magazine with a variety of ages and ethnicties.

.
Idea 3:

My final idea is to do a film magazine based on a specific streaming platform. My chosen platform would be Netflix. This world known streaming platform would be perfect for a film magazine as it holds and creates some of the best films. If I decided to go ahead with this idea I would choose that my magazine would come out monthly and would focus on Netflix's popular films from that month. This would captivate a large audience as each month would be a different genre which as a result would attract a different audience. As a
result of this I would not provide a subscription as every month is a different genre and reader might not be a fan of the magazine every month.
My magazine would be priced at £4 for print as this price range is affordable for all age groups and I will be showing a range of films regarding a wide variety of ages and for online it would be £2. I would also partner up with Netflix to get inside scoops and provide free trials for subscribers for Netflix. As well as promoting this streaming service I would also promote a local North London streaming service called L.O.Z STUDIOS and I will also give readers a free trial to this independent streaming service as a way of giving the company more viewers.
This will be targeted at all genders and races as I will be promoting a wide range of movies that attract a wide rang of audeinces and as a result most people will be able to find something they relate to or like within my magazine. Companies such as netfilx include a wide variety of ethnicities in their movies that they hold. As well as inlcudinging differnt types of films such as annimation.

Conclusion:

I have decided to choose my first idea as I feel like a genre based magazine is the best idea out of the three ideas I came up with. By choosing a romance genre, I will attract a wide audience as romance is one of the most popular genre, also my target audience is predominately female this as a result i am more likely to have a loyal fan base that will buy the subscription as women tend to have an ability to become more emotionally connected this will also lead to more readers wanting to participate in reviews and fan fiction. My target audience stereotypically will also prefer my colour scheme of pinks and red and as well it also conforms to the connotations of love which is crucial for a romance film magazine. I will also not only appeal to and older age group as people who are in relationships as they will be able to sympathise and reminisce with the movies but also appeal to teenage girls who are beginning to have relationships so as a result I will interest a mass audience.
